Description
Superintendent Lowery. "Superintendent christens Rock Monument" per the December 19, 1977 Campus Chronicle; https://openspace.dmacc.edu/campuschronicle/480/
An article in the November 9, 1981 Campus Chronicle (https://openspace.dmacc.edu/campuschronicle/37/) notes the reason for the start of the rock monument:
"The rock monument idea was based on a story about the Indians in the Andes Mountains. The Indians formed many tall rock piles along their trails in belief that picking up a rock, carrying it for awhile and then placing it on a pile of rocks would lighten their burden in life. Each rock symbolized a person that had passed by the rock pile.
The 1977 class decided a rock pile should be started at DMACC with each rock symbolizing an individual’s presence at the college with hopes that the tradition would be carried on each year."
